Last week was our first Humanities Week!
Each year group were given a continent to ‘explore’, taking part in many different activities and lessons to immerse themselves in that continent.

Read MoreYear 2 - Great Fire of London Workshop
Published 23/03/23, by Adam GilbertYear 2 have been studying The Great Fire of London in English and History. To end this fantastic unit, every child participated in a workshop where they travelled back in time to 1666 and explored the events surrounding the Great Fire of London. The children discovered what caused the fire, why it spread so quickly and how it impacted Londoners’ lives before reimagining the construction of a new, safer London.

Published 23/03/23, by Adam GilbertThursday 2nd March saw the celebration of World Book Day. The children were so engaged in all the activities and there was a real ‘book-buzz’ around the school. We welcomed author Sylvia Bishop into school. She has written many books including, ‘The Secret of the Night Train’ and ‘The Midnight Thief’. With Early Years and Key Stage 1, she helped the children to develop their own stories, thinking about an animal to start them off. For Key Stage 2 she talked about the importance of finding a story in everything, and what to do if you have writers block. She gave the children tips and tricks by using games and exercises. We have also been lucky enough to buy some new dictionaries and thesauri’ and used these to write our own stories. We opened the pages randomly, and had to pinpoint a word and try and include that in the story – some of the stories took such an interesting turn based on what came out! Sharing books and stories with other year groups also took place throughout the day. Year groups were paired up and got to move around the school.

Published 22/03/23, by Adam GilbertYear one were very excited to travel on a bus and a tube, enriching their current History topic of transport. They loved looking at the underground map and finding all the London landmarks that they have learnt about in English; it was great fun!

Published 22/03/23, by Adam GilbertYear 2 had the incredible opportunity to witness duckling eggs hatch. The children will be observing the ducklings over time and learning about the lifecycle of a duck to relate to their current Science topic, Animals Including Humans.
Read MoreYear 2 - Wisley Gardens
Published 22/03/23, by Adam GilbertOn Friday 10th February, the year 2 children ended their half term with an exciting trip to RHS Wisley Gardens. This trip has been organised to develop our knowledge linked to our science topic on 'Plants'. When we arrived at the gardens we were escorted by the Learning Team at Wisley to the education centre. After a brief introduction, we started our workshop titled 'How do plants grow?' First, we were shown a variety of seeds and plants from across the globe. Some of the seed pods were enormous and had come all the way from both Africa and South America. We were then taken to explore parts of the gardens, where our guide explained to us about some of the tallest trees that grow at Wisley and how large their trunks will be when fully grown. It was fasinating, and we were even able to apply some of our maths knowledge, thinking about if we were to measure the trees length would we do this in meters or centimeters.
After a good explore around the stunning gardens we went back to the education center and planted some seeds that we were able to take home with us. By that point we were all ravenous, so we had a break for lunch before a fun packed afternoon exploring the famous glass house which homes exotic plants that you'd usually only see in deserts or rainforests. At this point, we channeled our inner 'Henri Rousseau' the artist we have been learning about and sketched some plants like he used to in the Botanical Gardens in Paris. To end the day, we spent a little bit of time in the natural play area. Finally, after a long and exhausting day we were returned to school full of beans about what we had seen. Miss Kitchener told us that we had all walked around 18,000 steps! The children were incredibly well behaved and a credit to our fantastic school!
