  • Y5 Spotlight - Autumn Term

    Year 5 have kicked off the year with a splash! 5L and 5K have been lucky enough to have their two weeks of swimming lessons. Mr Lillie and Mr Kennedy were so impressed with how the children were happy to dive right into this part of the curriculum! Miss Ellerby’s class can’t wait to jump in, in the Spring term.

    Since September, we have explored a variety of different text types. This has included persuasive adverts; to visit our very own circus, and writing a sci-fi story continuation, which was based on the planet Pandora (Avatar films). One of our favourite topics (so far!) has been Oranges in No Man’s Land. It is a tale based during the civil war in Lebanon. We have been discussing what it must be like to go through war and the feelings refugees must feel. This has allowed us to explore empathy, something we have found particularly important considering the current climate.

    We have been spending a ‘whole’ lot of time on fractions recently. We are piecing it together quite nicely! If the next topic is half as good as this, we’re in for a real treat. Pushing on with Science, we have been exploring ‘Forces’. We have pulled off multiple experiments and investigations into air resistance and water resistance, as well as testing friction.We are currently discovering how materials are used in everyday life and their different purposes and uses.

    Throwing ourselves into the world of the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring this fascinating period in time. The Past Presents came to deliver, what can only be described as, an event that will go down in History! The workshop enabled us to embody the historical figures and recreate events that we had learnt so much about. The year 5 staff are looking forward to the rest of the year, and the magical curriculum that awaits.

  • Show Racism the Red Card

    On the 20th October, we’ve been wearing red to say no to racism! Together, we’ve come together as a school to spread the message that we will unite against racism and we will continue to support the UK’s leading anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card

    Year 6 also took part in a workshop, with the aims:

    • To educate young people about how to recognise racism
    • To consider the impact that racism has
    • To empower young people to challenge racism in the communities in which they live, providing them with relevant knowledge and information to enable them to do this.
    • To help young people prepare to play an active role as citizens in an increasingly multi-cultural society

  • Y3 Spotlight - Autumn Term

    What an incredible start to Year 3 the children have had! They have settled into the new routines and have been learning lots of wonderful things.

    In maths, we have been working hard to solve subtraction and addition number sentences with 3-digit numbers with renaming.

    In English, we have been using our imaginations to design a new creature based on our story focus of ‘The Black Hat’, writing detailed descriptions using expanded noun phrases, similes, and personification. We have been super impressed with the children’s word choices to make their writing interesting to the reader.

    Our science learning this term has been about Rocks. We are all amazing scientists and loved carrying out lots of exciting experiments. We have made predictions, recorded our results into tables and explained our findings. Our favourite part was finding out about fossils and then creating our own made from salt dough. The children have worked hard to learn new vocabulary and are fantastic at explaining. I am sure you will be impressed!

    We had a wonderful time at Bookfest meeting the author ‘Olaf Falafel’. We couldn’t wait to start reading ‘Trixie Pickle Art Avenger’.

    As part of Black History Month, year 3 participated in a workshop based on Malorie Blackman. The children enjoyed the drama-based activities and learning all about her. 

    We are tremendously proud of how hard all the children have been working and they are all superstars!

  • Y4 Spotlight - Autumn Term

    What a fun start to Year 4 we have had! We have been learning about lots of fun and interesting topics that the children have loved.

    In Maths, we have been learning our 6, 7, 9 and 11 times tables, using a range of methods such as arrays, grouping and bar models.

    In English this half term, we have been looking at a story called ‘FArTHER’ based on a character who has a dream of flying but is sent away to war. So far in this unit the children have written post cards, diary entries, summaries and will go on to create their own story about a dream of their own!

    In History, we have been looking at the rise and fall of Roman Britain. This has clearly been the children’s favourite topic so far this academic year and we cannot wait to visit Ufton Court to learn even more about the Romans. One of our favourite lessons in this unit was learning all about the powerful Queen of the Iceni tribe, Boudicca, who challenged the Romans in a fierce battle.

    Towards of the end of last half term, some of Year 4 were able to go to Wimbledon Bookfest where they watched a performance by Stephen Mulhern and received a copy of his book ‘Magic Max’ based on his childhood. Lots of children are enjoying this book and we hope they recommend to a friend afterwards.

  • Y4 Ufton Court

    At the end of last term, Year 4 went on an incredible trip to Ufton Court, a Roman village in Reading. We had a fun-filled day of activities immersing ourselves into being Romans for the day! While barking commands, marching, sieving through artefacts, the students were able to understand what it was like to be a legionary during the Roman times.

    Roman Artefacts: this session we explored Roman artefacts and decided on the correct use. We bartered between oil bottles being a bedpan and a trophy and oil applicators being horseshoe cleaners or livestock feeders. The students were able to use their reasoning for siding with each use and basing their decisions through their knowledge of Roman Britain.

    Roman Skills: Here, students were able to weave fences, make their own yarn and learn how to create fire. Students worked collaboratively in each task, working as a well-oiled Legion!

    Roman Manoeuvres: Students learnt how to work together to create a strong unified Legion. We learnt how to effectively use a pilum and scutum, making Year 4 a force to be reckoned with! Learning many Roman battle manoeuvres, I’m sure no one would want to challenge us!

    Having spoken to many students across the year group, the trip was a raging success, and we are incredibly thankful to Ufton Court for facilitating an amazing day for Aragon! Year 4 showed just how great they are, and we are welcomed back next year!

  • Nutty Scientist Workshop

    We had a very special visit from the Nutty Scientists! The innovative Nutty Scientists® teaching techniques and curriculum is an effective way to get kids excited about science.

    The Nutty Scientists delivered two assemblies to all the children, where they wowed them with crazy experiments! Then, our Year 6 children got to participate in a workshop. It was an awe-inspiring day!

  • School Council - Autumn Wreath

    The school council would like to announce the winners of our Autumn Wreath Competiton.

    Thank you for embracing our idea and helping us raise money for our school playground. Looking through all the entries was great fun. We were overwhelmed by the effort placed and creativity of the wreaths and found the decision for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place very difficult. 

    However, we are very pleased to announce 1st place goes to Parla from 4B (for her beautiful owl design), 2nd place goes to Savannah from 3G (with a fantastic witch design) and 3rd place goes to Mason RP (with a very cute pumpkin design). All three wreaths are on show outside Mrs Ryders Office so go ahead and take a look. 

    The prizes were awarded in our celebration assemblies today.

  • Wimbledon Book Fest

    Year 3-6 visited Wimbledon BookFest Festival in October 2023. Aragon has now been attending the festival since 2019 and each year gets better and better!

    Year 3 saw children's author Olaf Falafel. The author, illustrator and highly engaging comedian brought his laugh-out-loud adventure to BookFest, featuring Trixie Pickle, the Banksy of her school. Trixie loves art and hates bullies - and so decides to become an Art Avenger, righting wrongs at her school through art. Highly illustrated throughout by Olaf, and with fact files of hilarious and irreverent details about being a real-life artist, this event was magical and extremely funny. 

    Year 4 had a workshop with TV magician and author Stephen Mulhern. The Max Magic series came to life with this event with its author: magician and TV star Stephen Mulhern. Stephen gave readings, stories from his life and amazing magic tricks galore! Max Mullers loves doing magic tricks - his gran has taught him everything he knows. In the second Max Magic book, Max competes in a national TV talent show with side-splitting results! Inspired by Stephen’s own journey to fame, the latest book in the Max Magic series is an unforgettable adventure celebrating friendship, family and magic!

    Year 5 had a special workshop with former Children’s Laureate, Cressida Cowell, who returned to Wimbledon BookFest with her daring new adventure. The creator of How to Train Your Dragon and Wizards of Once series, discussed her thrilling new series about a group of children who find the crossing points to other dimensions – with live drawing!

    Year 6 visited Empireland author Sathnam Sanghera, with his entertaining yet informative introduction to the British Empire for schools. This event explored how Britain's empire once made it the most powerful nation on earth, and how it still affects our lives in many ways today - from the words we use, to the food we eat and the sports we play. Because how can we ever make the world a kinder, better place for the future, if we don't know the truth about the past? Year 6 even managed to meet Sanghera and get their book signed!

  • Year 5 - Anglo Saxon Workshop

    Year 5 were lucky enough to be visited by a teacher from 'The Past Presents' and participate in a Saxon and Vikign workshop!

    The children got to:

    • Re-enact a battle between the Romans, Celts, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings
    • Discover the different items that went into a warrior's burial
    • Wear traditional Anglo-Saxon clothing
    • Raided a monastery, taking with them valuable items
    • Practice writing with a quill and ink
    • Learn about the day-to-day life of an Anglo-Saxon: drying herbs, exploring artefacts and the types of weapons used
    • Prepare a Viking longship for a voyage across the sea

  • Black History Week

    This year's focus is on the significant contributions of Black females in the UK who have been catalysts for change in various domains, including politics, the arts, technology, science, and literature.

    Throughout the week, the children immersed themselves in the stories and achievements of extraordinary women. They explored the legacies of Black artists such as Alma Thomas and Betye Starr, finding inspiration to create their own artwork. Additionally, the children paid tribute to the Windrush Generation, learning about the brave individuals who crossed the Atlantic to help rebuild the U.K. in it's time of need. We looked at the lasting impact that incredible nurses had upon the formation of the NHS and considered the stories of children who came to England.

    Year 5 and 6 students enjoyed a special online meeting with Kandace Chimburi, the author of 'Windrush Child.' Chimburi shared her insights and motivations behind writing Black history narratives for children, leaving a lasting impact on the young minds. Year 3 and 4 students had a fantastic time in a Malorie Blackman workshop, learning about the renowned author's life and her literary contributions. Years 1 and 2 were so excited to welcome a visit from Aragon parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maunganidze, who inspired the young learners to become their own heroes.
