  • Year 5 Spotlight - Spring Term

    Published 22/03/24, by Adam Gilbert

Welcome to the Wizarding World of Year 5. As you may have guessed, we have been studying Harry Potter in English.  We have been writing persuasive pieces, coaxing people to travel on our very own Knight Bus; creating descriptions, of Hogwarts and the professors; producing our own narratives, finishing the Prisoner of Azkaban in the style of J.K Rowling; and writing a commentary for a Quidditch match. All these pieces of writing have been ‘magical’. The Professors have been stunned by the progress they have seen in our student wizards’ use of specific literary features.  To conclude our topic, we visited Harry Potter Studios and absolutely LOVED it! Seeing the sets and props up close was such a treat. So many people commented on how smart our school uniform was, and said it was quite like Hogwarts!

In Maths, we have conquered fractions, decimals, and percentages. Not a small feat, as we had to use a third of our brain for fractions, 0.33 of our brain for decimals and 33% of our brain to work out the percentage! We are 100% sure, we could convert anything you asked us to.

Our Science has been out of this world! We have been focussing on Space and know the difference between a Geocentric Solar System model and a Heliocentric model; we currently believe in a Heliocentric Model where planets orbit the Sun and Earth rotates on an axis. We know the order of the planets and have created some fascinating fact files. After taking a trip to the Science Museum, we were even more impressed with the astronauts' abilities to do anything in their huge gloves!

In Design and Technology, we have been creating our own pop-up books. We first designed them, with our target audience being a reception or Year 1 child. We are yet to share them with these year groups, but hope they enjoy hearing them as much as we enjoyed making them. Creating the lever mechanism was probably the most challenging part, but we were then able to use split pins to have the arching movement.

The epicentre of our Geography this term has been Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Volcanoes. We got to make models of the tectonic plates using Oreos, and even better that we got to eat them after! We were lucky enough to take a trip to the Natural History Museum and experience what it would feel like to be in in a stage 4 earthquake – we all had wobbly legs after.

We have been fortunate enough to have lots of other educational visits and visitors too this half term.

A huge thank you to Raynes Park High School for inviting us over as part of our STEM week. We were tasked with creating the strongest totem pole, which had to withstand increasingly strong wind. It was a super opportunity, and we are so grateful to them for inviting us. We also had a visit from Jan Mayoran, Director of Finance for The Willow Learning Trust. As part of STEM, she spoke to us about her role and the kind of responsibilities you have as an accountant. We then created our own businesses and thought about intake and expenses and tried to make a profit! Thank you very much to Jan for her time. There was also a crime scene in the Year 5 corridor. As forensic scientist, we had to collect and present the data found to give to the police so they could find out who the criminal was. There were hair samples, cotton from a scarf, a ripped train ticket, footprints, fingerprints; no clue was left unturned!

We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Nabhinandan and Jayanti Das from the London Institue of Vedic Education. They led a workshop all about the Hindu Holi festival. We got to experience an element of the celebration - using colourful powders and putting them on each other!

Finally, thank you to all at St. Martin’s Church for their spectacular Easter journey that we were invited to. It is always so informative, and the volunteers are so engaging and kind to give up their time to give us the experience. Most children's favourite part was partaking in a recreation of the last supper.

As you can see, we have been extremely busy this term in Year 5.

All that is left to say is, “Mischief, managed!”

  • World Book Day 2024

    Published 15/03/24, by Adam Gilbert

This years theme at Aragon was all about Reading for Pleasure!

Our entire school recently took part in World Book Day on 7th March 2024! This incredible annual event is a charity event held in the United Kingdom and Ireland on the first Thursday in March. On World Book Day, every child in full-time education in the UK and the Republic of Ireland is provided with a voucher to be spent on books; the event was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1998.

It is important for children to develop a love for reading as it helps grow their vocabulary and their understanding about the world. The closeness of snuggling up with their favourite book leads to an increase in self-confidence and imagination, and helps children gain a wealth of knowledge from the books we share with them.

To kickstart the day, the whole school were invited to the MUGA in the playground for a costume parade. Each year group had a turn to parade around the MUGA showing off their wonderful costumes of their favourite book character. Miss Brown and Mrs Garcia chose 4 winners! However, all of the costumes were absolutely incredible so thank you!

Throughout the day, we did a variety of activities. We wrote stories just by choosing random words from the thesaurus to determine, the setting, characters, problem and solution. It was lovely to see the imagination and creativity flow.

We made ‘loo roll’ book characters which was great fun! In addition to this, we had a ‘trade off’ where children bought in books from home they no longer wanted and traded them with a book they wanted. We finished our day by watching some ‘Masked Reader’ videos where we had to guess who was behind the mask.

We are immensely proud of all our students for their enthusiasm and creativity during World Book Day.

Let’s keep the love for reading alive throughout the year and keep those pages turning!

  • School Council - Houses of Parliament

    Published 05/03/24, by Adam Gilbert

Mrs Jones would like to thank our amazing school council for being so excellent on our recent trip to the Houses of Parliament with our local MP Siobhain McDonagh. It was a brilliant day and the children learnt so much about the origin and reasons behind certain parliamentary traditions. If you see any members of our School Council, ask them about the 'black rod', what Queen Victoria thought of the House of Lords the first time she saw it or why the colours red and green were chosen to the different houses. I'm sure they would be happy to share with you, all that they learnt. We even had our own School Council meeting over lunch in the parliamentary building itself, where we voted on this month's Teacher of the Month! How official is that?

Throughout the day, they showed themselves to be enthusiastic, attentive, sensible and well-mannered. I was so proud of them and they should be so proud of themselves. Well Done School Council! Thank you to Siobhain for inviting us.

Aragon Primary School was delighted to support 'Place 2 Be's' annual 'Children's Mental Health Week'. Held every February, 2024's week ran from the 5th11th February with the theme 'My Voice Matters.' Pupils at Aragon attended a launch assembly on the Monday morning discussing the importance of mental health and reducing stigma around this subject and increasing open dialogue.

During the week, children participated in a number of activities linked to the theme 'My Voice Matters' including daily emotional check in's with staff, a special PSHE lesson using their voices to discuss different emotions, accumulating in a special 'Express Yourself' non uniform day where children were invited to wear a colour that reflected their feelings and to bring a small comforter toy from home. This week is just one of the many ways that Aragon Primary School achieves its long term commitment to making our school a place where all children feel that they can safely and openly express their emotions.

  • Year 6 Spotlight - Spring Term

    Published 26/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

    Trips galore in Year 6!

Last week was a very busy week for Year 6 as there were 3 excellent trips which the children thoroughly enjoyed over the course of the week. Before and after school booster sessions have also started to help prepare the children for their SATs in May.

    We're soaring, flying!

Last Tuesday, Year 6 were invited to watch Glenthorne's dress rehearsal of High School Musical! The children loved watching  all the excellent singing, dancing and acting and has inspired lots of the children to audition for the Year 6 production in July. The pupils and staff enjoyed pointing the familiar faces of lots of our ex-Aragon students who performed wonderfully!

    Citizenship Day

As our pupils grow up, we believe it's important to begin preparing the children for the wider-world. Last Thursday, the pupils participated in an engaging workshop led by different groups of the people teaching them how to stay safe in the community and what to do in emergency scenarios. The children got to meet the police, paramedics, Neighbourhood Watch Team, TFL, cycling safety team, fire brigade and the clean air pollution team.

    Sandown Races:

Thank you to Racing to School for an incredible school trip to Sandown Park Racecourse last Friday for one of our Year 6 Maths groups. Many of the children experienced a race day for the first time with lots of engaging maths activities planned throughout the day, some of which included: working out the area of the parade ring, converting between metric and imperial measurements, learning how to read a race card and understanding probability. One of the children said ‘This was the best school trip of my whole time at Aragon’ while another said ‘I’ve learnt so much, I can’t wait to come back here!’ The children got to wear jockey silks for the first time and come up close to the horses that raced! ๐ŸŽ

  • KS2 Rise Gymnastics Competition

    Published 26/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Last half term saw the return of the Rise Gymnastics Competitions for Merton Borough and we are incredibly proud of the children who were selected and represented Aragon.

The children selected needed to choregraph their own routine which included a creative start and end position alongside one skill from each of the eight skill areas. All of the children worked hard during their lunch time practising and rehearsing this ready for the event. They also then had to perform two vaults.

First up, was Year 5 and 6 on Wednesday 31st January. Cyrus, Harry, Hollie and Megan headed to Harris Academy in Wimbledon with Mrs Cox and Mrs Stonell to compete against other schools in the borough. On Friday 9th February, Daisy, Millie, Callum and Finley represented the Year 3 and 4 team to compete with Mrs Christelle and Mrs Moloney.

All of the staff were so impressed by the children’s hard efforts and attitudes they showed towards the event. The time and effort the children had put in to their routines really showed with the level of skill they performed. Cyrus and Harry wowed the coaches with their impressive move and were even asked to teach it to the other children alongside Daisy and Millie winning a bronze medal for their vault!

Overall, we were all extremely proud of all the children chosen and their fantastic efforts within the competition – well done everyone! This half term we are looking forward to another 3 big events which include inclusive football, tag rugby development and netball championships.

  • Year 4 - Artist Visit

    Published 26/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Last week, we were joined by Emily Fellah, children’s illustrator and artist. She spent time in each year 1 and 4 class sharing her journey to becoming a published illustrator. She gave tips on how to reach success and reiterated the message ‘never give up’ a moto she lives by.

She shared some of her books and took us on an adventure meeting the characters she had created from superhero insects to gingerbread monsters!

Then onto the main event. The ‘how to’ part of the session where Emily took us through the simple steps in creating our very own characters, from bears to robots and superheroes! She gave tips and hints throughout. The children all created their own pieces of work and were super proud of the final pieces.

Our entire school recently took part in Storytelling Week, from 27 January to 4 February! ๐Ÿ“– This incredible annual event is a vibrant celebration of the power that stories hold, reminding us of the joys of sharing them. โœจ๐Ÿ“š

Stories have the remarkable ability to teach us about the world around us, letting us step into someone else’s shoes, encouraging empathy, and broadening our horizons. They also provide a means to relax and escape from the everyday, whilst nurturing essential literacy skills.

To kickstart the week,  Mrs. Ryder and Mr. Gilbert, shared an enchanting tale during our assembly. They then set a thrilling challenge for the children: to learn and retell a traditional story over the course of the week! ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“

The culmination of this exciting week was a magnificent assembly, where each year group showcased their incredible storytelling skills. The performances were absolutely captivating!

Throughout the week, our eager students eagerly shared stories amongst themselves, and were treated to some mesmerizing tales from adults around the school. • Y5 - Natural History and Science Museum

    Published 09/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Year 5 had a wonderful time on Tuesday 6th February on their trip to not one, but TWO of London’s best museums, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum.

Our first stop was the Natural History Museum museum. We first embarked on a journey to the centre of the Earth! We were able to use our knowledge from our geography lessons to correctly identify the different layers that make up our Earth’s structure before learning about what happens during an Earthquake! We even took a trip through the Earthquake simulator to experience the ground moving beneath our feet (don’t worry, we held on tight!).

After a quick pit stop for lunch, we were off again to the Science Museum. We explored the wonders of space ahead of our new science unit next half term and learnt more about America’s race to put a human on the Moon. We then explored the key events of creating modern machinery, visiting the James Watt section of the museum to get up close to one of the first steam trains ever built!
