School Council

Each year, elections are held in every class from Year 2 upwards. Elected representatives attend meetings every three weeks and conduct half-termly assemblies to discuss issues, ideas, and events raised within the council. These assemblies provide updates to the school community and ensure that pupil voice remains transparent. Additionally, representatives report termly to the School Governors. Within the council, children take on roles of responsibility, including:

  • Chair
  • Vice-Chair
  • Treasurer
  • Marketing
  • EYFS Liaison
  • Governors Liaison
  • Eco Warriors Liaison
  • OPAL Liaison
  • Wellbeing Committee Liaison

This is their Mission Statement 2025:

Our vision is for all the children at Aragon Primary School to be able to have a voice and contribute towards the continuous improvement of our school and the wider community.  It is our aim, as the School Council, to strive to empower our peers to do their best and develop perseverance and resilience that will enable them to achieve great things for themselves and our school.  We will do this by being excellent role models and always ensuring we show respect, kindness and enthusiasm, both within the classroom and playground alike. We vow to value every contribution made by our peers and fully represent their ideas in all School Council meetings. We will endeavour to lead Pupil Voice to a high level of success as children are the heart of our school.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

  • Book Swap Shop - We held a successful book swap shop where we exchanged previously read books and sold them to raise money. The event encouraged a love of reading, promoted sustainability by reusing books, and gave everyone the chance to discover new stories.

  • Teacher/Children Mufti Day – Teachers dressed as pupils, and pupils dressed as teachers, which had everyone laughing.

  • Valentine Bake Sale – We sold delicious homemade cakes and received tremendous support.Annual
  • "Break the Rules" Day – Pupils could break up to four rules from a list, paying a 50p fine per rule. Organising this was incredibly fun.

  • Autumn Competition – Last year, pupils created stunning autumn-themed wreaths to decorate the school. This year, they made beautiful stained glass windows with autumn themes.

Over the past three years, our fundraising efforts have raised an incredible £1,500 for our school.

NON-FUNDRAISING EVENTS

  • Interviewing the Mayor of Merton - We had an exciting opportunity to ask questions to the Mayor of Merton, helping us learn more about the role of the Mayor and how local decisions are made.

  • Annual Kindness Challenge – Held at Christmas, this challenge spreads kindness within the wider community while earning points for classes.

  • Food Bank Donation Day – Collaborating with Wimbledon Food Bank, we collected a staggering half-tonne of donations. The generosity of our school community was inspiring.

  • Termly Certificate of Thanks – Jointly awarded with the governing body, this recognises non-teaching staff who contribute to making our school exceptional. Recipients have included our Site Manager and Chair of Governors, with more to come.

  • School Council Dance-Off – A lunchtime event where year groups competed in a dance-off, with winners enjoying a movie afternoon.

  • The Big Fat Quiz of Aragon – A fun quiz with 50 questions about our school’s history and quirky facts about our staff. It encouraged everyone to interact more and fostered a stronger sense of community.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • OPAL Activities Week - During OPAL Activities Week, along with the Wellbeing Champions, we will be leading and supporting a range of fun, inclusive activities during lunchtime OPAL play. We will help organise and encourage games such as mini rugby matches, extra tennis equipment, and creative activities like friendship bracelet making. These activities are designed to enhance play for all of our friends, with a special focus on supporting our Year 6 children by providing positive, active, and relaxing opportunities during their SATs week.
  • Aragon's Got Talent! - Aragon’s Got Talent is our whole‑school celebration of creativity, confidence, and individuality, where we are invited to showcase our talents in a supportive and enthusiastic environment. From singing and dancing to comedy, magic, and instrumental performances, the event encourages us to shine, build self‑belief, and celebrate each other’s strengths. It is a joyful opportunity for everyone to express themselves, develop performance skills, and share our talents with our friends and staff across the school.
  • Visit to the Houses of Parliament – We will enjoy a memorable visit to the Houses of Parliament, exploring this historic and awe‑inspiring building and learning about its rich history and role in shaping our country. During the visit, we will deepen our understanding of democracy and government, and will have the exciting opportunity to ask our local MP, Dame Siobhán McDonagh, questions about her role and responsibilities as a Member of Parliament.
