Year 5 Information

Welcome to Year 5

Here you will find all the essential information regarding your child's class and daily routines.

PE (Physical Education)

This year we will continue having two PE sessions each week. We are delighted to welcome back Sean McInnes Sports coaching who will be teaching one of your child's PE lessons per week (outdoor PE). The other lesson will be taught by your child's class teacher (indoor PE).

PE Expectations

Outdoor PE: Children should wear PE kit to school.

Indoor PE: Children should attend in school uniform and bring their PE kit to change into.

All PE clothing must be named.

PE kit should consist of a house-coloured T-shirt, school jumper, and plain black or navy shorts or tracksuit bottoms.

For indoor PE, children must remove their shoes. If they’d like to wear socks with grip underneath, this is acceptable.

Stud earrings must be removed or covered before PE.

Uniform

Please ensure children:

Wear full school uniform, including their house tie.

Wear black footwear (trainers are permitted if completely black, including branding).

Do not wear jewellery other than stud earrings.

Do not wear make-up or nail polish.

Have all belongings clearly labelled.

Snacks and Water Bottles

We warmly encourage your child to bring a healthy snack to enjoy during their breaktime (10:45-11:00 am), this must, however not be crisps, sweets or chocolate. All children are strongly advised to come to school with a water bottle (containing water only) which can be refilled throughout the school day.

Equipment

We provide all the necessary equipment for your child during the school day. However, to help ease the transition to Year 6, we welcome pupils to bring in a pencil case with their own equipment. If these items become a distraction, the class teacher may ask to remove them.

Homework

Spellings:

A spelling overview will be sent home at the beginning of each half term, including weekly spellings and test dates. Spelling tests take place every Friday. There will be no specific directed spelling homework however we strongly encourage your child to practise these at home in a way that suits them as often as possible.

Arithmetic

Arithmetic homework will be sent home every Tuesday and must be returned on Wednesday. We will review it together in class to address misconceptions and prepare children for the expectations of Year 6. Incomplete work will be finished during Wednesday lunchtime.

Reading comments

Children are expected to read at home daily for at least 10 minutes and record a comment in their reading diary each day. Diaries should be brought to school daily for checking. We held a year group assembly on Day 1 where we explained our expectations of the reading comments (see below):

Comment from the child

Your child should have received their new diary. We have asked that they personalise and decorate these how they wish- this may include drawing pictures of their favourite characters or creating a collage using old pages of their favourite magazines.

Inside the front cover of your child’s reading diary, there will be ideas and prompts that the children can use to base their reading responses on. Children should be encouraged to read a range of genres, texts and authors. We have a wide range of books in our classrooms and around the school, which the children are more than welcome to borrow. It really benefits the children to continue to read to an adult at least once a week to support them and discuss the book together. For children who show enthusiasm to reading (through their reading comments), their name will be entered into the weekly Reading Raffle where they might win a book of their choice!

Home time arrangements

As you are aware, Aragon Primary School has a duty to safeguard our pupils and to always ensure their wellbeing. As part of this duty, we would like to take this opportunity to confirm end of day arrangements for your child, now they are entering Year 5. Children in Year 5 are allowed to walk home or to meet you at a gate/sibling's classroom in an aid to build independence. If you wish for your child to walk home or around to an agreed meeting spot, please complete and return the form to the letter that came home on Day 1. Without permission, your child will not be allowed to walk home alone. If circumstances change in the long or short term, please provide written permission to your child’s class teacher.

A reminder that smart phones are not allowed to be brought into school.

Other Information

In Year 5, pupils have the exciting opportunity to nominate themselves as vice captain for their house team. This role allows them to assist with school events, including house afternoons.

We cover a variety of exciting topics in Year 5, including a study of Harry Potter, which includes a visit to Warner Bros. Studios, where the films were made. This is always a highlight for the children!

As part of our PE curriculum, the children are trained as sports leaders to guide group activities with younger pupils. Later in the year, they will have the opportunity to apply these skills during break times and to assist with sports days.
