In December, Year 6 had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, one of the largest mosques in Western Europe. The visit provided pupils with a unique chance to deepen their understanding of Islam and see their Religious Education learning brought vividly to life.

During the trip, pupils observed a congregational prayer, explored the mosque’s extensive library, and enjoyed a guided tour showcasing the building’s beautiful design and architecture. Throughout the visit, the children asked thoughtful questions and reflected on the values of respect, tolerance, and community that underpin both the faith and the mosque’s work.

Miss Franks, our Year 6 lead, commented:
“This visit was an incredibly enriching experience for our pupils. Seeing their curiosity, respect, and genuine engagement was a real highlight. It brought our learning to life in such a meaningful way.”

We extend our sincere thanks to the Baitul Futuh Mosque for their warm hospitality and the time they dedicated to our pupils. Year 6 returned to school inspired, reflective, and enriched by the experience — truly a day to remember.

The festive spirit truly filled our school in the weeks leading up to Christmas, bringing joy, excitement, and plenty of memorable moments for our children and staff.

During the final week of term, our Nursery and Reception children wrote their letters to Father Christmas and proudly posted them in the postbox on Aragon Road. It was a magical experience for our youngest learners and a lovely way to begin our Christmas celebrations.

The whole school also came together to enjoy a fantastic performance of Red Riding Hood. The pantomime was full of laughter, audience participation, and festive fun, creating wonderful memories for pupils and staff alike.

Our Key Stage 2 pupils delivered their annual Christmas carol concerts at Emmanuel Church and Morden Park Baptist Church. We were incredibly grateful to David and his team at Emmanuel, and to Ken and his team at Morden Park Baptist, for welcoming us so warmly. Both concerts were beautifully heartwarming and festive, and we were immensely proud of the children for their confident and joyful performances.

Our Year 1 and Year 2 children dazzled us with their extravagant Christmas productions. A huge well done went to all pupils and staff involved — their hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm truly shone through. We were delighted to follow these with Nursery and Reception’s performances the following week.

On Christmas Jumper Day, we enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch together. Over 500 children were served, and we extended a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful Olive Catering team for making this enormous task look effortless. It was a fantastic way to bring our whole school community together and share the joy of the season.

As the term drew to a close, we thanked all our families for their continued support throughout the year. We hoped that everyone enjoyed a peaceful, joyful Christmas filled with laughter and love.

From all of us at Aragon, we wished you a wonderful festive break and a very Happy New Year!

This autumn term has been an inspiring one at Aragon Primary, with our pupil leaders stepping confidently into their roles and making a real difference across the school. Whether supporting younger children, leading new initiatives, or helping shape our school community, they have shown commitment, enthusiasm, and an ever-growing sense of responsibility. It has been wonderful to see their confidence flourish as they take on these important roles.

School Council

Our newly elected School Council representatives have had a brilliant first term. They began by taking part in a democratic vote and assigning key responsibilities to our Year 6 councillors—an important experience in leadership and decision-making.

This term, the council has been busy generating ideas to support both our school and the wider community. They are excited to announce their Winter Bake Sale on Tuesday 16th December, with additional plans for a second-hand book sale, a pyjama/mufti day, and the return of much-loved events such as Aragon’s Got Talent.

The council is also exploring ways to make regular donations to a local food bank, helping pupils understand how kindness can make a difference beyond our school gates.

A highlight of the term was a visit from Councillor Sally Kenny, who shared valuable insights into local government and answered thoughtful questions from our pupils. It was an inspiring session that deepened their understanding of representation and community responsibility.

School Council Lead: Miss Thompstone

House Captains

Our house and vice captains have made an impressive start, focusing on strengthening house identity and pride across the school—beginning in Nursery! All Nursery children have now been assigned to a house, and many have already begun earning house points through their excellent effort and behaviour.

Each week, our new house leaderboard is revealed in celebration assembly, generating excitement and healthy competition. We were especially impressed by the creativity shown in the Bonfire Night artwork and Winter poetry competitions. Congratulations to our winners!

We are excited to continue raising the profile of our house system throughout the year, with plenty more competitions to come.

House Captain Lead: Miss Smith

Eco Warriors 2025–2026

The Eco Warriors have made an ambitious and enthusiastic start to their environmental goals. After reviewing the brilliant eco-work already happening in school, they set new aims for the year, including:

Reducing food waste at lunchtime

Helping everyone use our new recycling bins correctly

Planting more trees to brighten up the playground

Carrying out a whole-school litter pick

Our Year 6 Eco Reps have also taken on the responsibility of managing the Eco Question of the Month, announcing winners and setting new challenges during assembly. Their continued hard work is bringing us closer to achieving the Green Flag Award.

Eco Warrior Lead: Miss A Blake

Reading Champions

Our Reading Champions have had an important role in spreading a love of books throughout Aragon. After completing training, they began supporting younger readers in Nursery and Reception—helping children choose books they enjoy and sharing stories together.

They have also taken responsibility for refreshing our book nooks each month, selecting new themes and ensuring the spaces remain welcoming and inspiring. Around the school, children have enjoyed their book recommendations and “book talk” as they proudly carry their favourite reads.

Their dedication is helping to keep our reading areas tidy, inviting, and packed with exciting stories.

Reading Champion Lead: Miss Brown

Mental Health Champions

Our Mental Health Champions have worked incredibly hard this term to help make Aragon a supportive, caring environment for everyone. After completing their training, they have been:

Monitoring the playground and helping to spot any children who may need support

Setting up games and playing with others at lunchtime

Seeking adult help when friendship challenges arise

Planning activities for Children’s Mental Health Week in February

Meeting with Miss Atkins to help shape PSHE across the school

Their thoughtful approach and positive attitude are helping to strengthen wellbeing across the school community.

Mental Health Champion Lead: Mr Myers

PE Prefects

From Years 2 to 6, our PE Prefects have played a key role in supporting our PE curriculum. They have helped teachers by demonstrating skills, organising equipment, and showing what good sportsmanship looks like. They’ve also been selecting the “Sportsperson of the Lesson,” celebrating kindness, effort, and teamwork.

A special mention goes to our Year 5 and 6 prefects, who have been running fun physical activities during break times for Nursery and Reception children—helping to build confidence and early enthusiasm for sport.

PE Prefect Lead: Miss Ballantine

Digital Leaders

Our Digital Champions have hit the ground running this term, meeting regularly to discuss technology across the school and how they can help improve computing lessons.

Their ideas have included:

A weekly Computing Whizz of the Week award

More computing clubs for our tech enthusiasts

A Christmas-themed e-safety poster competition

They have been fantastic role models in lessons, supporting teachers and classmates with technology. Their commitment and passion are helping to make computing more engaging, fun, and accessible for everyone. We are excited to see what 2026 brings for this brilliant team.

Digital Leader Lead: Mr Kennedy

Yesterday, Wednesday 3rd December 2025, our Year 5 pupils stepped into the fascinating world of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings during an immersive experience day – a true highlight of this term’s History curriculum!

We were thrilled to welcome back a fantastic history company renowned for bringing the past to life through hands-on, interactive workshops. Having worked with them before, we knew this would be a day filled with excitement, learning and unforgettable moments.

Throughout the day, children had the chance to:

Pack a Viking ship and set off on a raid
Pupils became Viking warriors, preparing for a daring journey across the seas and taking part in strategic missions.

Write like Anglo-Saxon scribes using ink and quills
They discovered traditional writing techniques and learned how stories and records were preserved centuries ago.

Dress in authentic costumes
With Anglo-Saxon and Viking attire provided by the company, children truly felt part of the era.

Re-enact dramatic battles and burials
From the raid on Lindisfarne to the Battle of Hastings, pupils explored key historical events through role-play and storytelling.

Celebrate with a Viking feast
The day concluded with lively sagas and tales from Viking society – a perfect ending to an incredible experience.

What Year 5 Thought

“I loved dressing up as a Viking – the helmet was so heavy! It felt like we were really going on a raid.”

“Writing with a quill was tricky but fun. It made me realise how hard it was to write in those times.”

“The battle re-enactment was the best part! We had to work as a team and think like real warriors.”

A Word from Mrs Murphy, Year 5 Lead

“This experience day is always a highlight for Year 5. It brings history to life in such a memorable way and really deepens the children’s understanding of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking periods. The excitement and engagement we saw today were fantastic!”

This event offered a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to learn through doing – and judging by the smiles and enthusiasm, it’s a day they won’t forget!

This week, pupils across Aragon Primary have taken part in an exciting whole-school project exploring people, places and belief through Humanities. Our theme, “Discovering Aragon”, has helped children make a unique connection between our school’s name, the region of Aragon in Spain, and Catherine of Aragon, a remarkable Queen who changed the course of English history.

Throughout the school, children have been fully immersed in learning across History, Geography and Religious Education, discovering how Catherine’s life linked two countries and how her beliefs influenced major events in the Tudor period. Pupils have compared the human and physical geography of Aragon and England, explored places of worship, studied historical portraits and even taken part in debates about key decisions made during her lifetime.

Deputy Headteacher Mr Gilbert shared his excitement about the project:

“Humanities Week gives our pupils the opportunity to understand the world and the people within it in a deeper and more meaningful way. Making a direct connection to our school name has been a powerful experience for the children. We are incredibly proud of their curiosity, creativity and confidence this week.”

Across the school, pupils have been eager to share what they have learned:

“I didn’t know a real queen came from Aragon like our school name!” – Year 2 pupil

“Spain is so different to where we live. I want to go and see the mountains!” – Year 4 pupil

“Catherine of Aragon was really brave. She stood up for what she believed in.” – Year 6 pupil

To celebrate the week, each year group created a short film showcasing their learning, which was shared with the whole school. The video highlighted how every pupil has taken pride in discovering their school’s historical and cultural links and demonstrated the high-quality learning across all year groups.

We would like to congratulate all pupils and staff for making Humanities Week such a memorable and inspiring experience. We hope the children leave the week understanding that our school name has a story and that they are now part of it.

As part of our current Geography topic, Settlements and Land Use, Year 3 have been learning about different types of settlements and the choices people make when deciding where to live. The children have been investigating questions such as:
Why do people choose certain locations? How is land used in our local area?

To support this learning, each class took part in a local field trip, exploring streets and a nearby park close to school. During the visit, pupils used their investigative skills to:

Gather evidence about land use in Morden

Take photographs of key features

Collect data on housing, transport, and green spaces

Back in class, the children will analyse their findings and create reports in the style of a geographer, using maps, diagrams, and written explanations to present their conclusions.

Why Morden?

Our local area, Morden, provides a fantastic example of a suburban settlement with a mix of residential areas, transport links, and recreational spaces. This real-world investigation helps pupils understand how geography shapes communities and influences everyday life.

What the Children Said

“I didn’t realise there were so many different types of houses so close to school!”
“The park is really important because people need green spaces to play and relax.”
“I liked counting the shops and seeing what people use them for.”

A Word from Mrs Roach, Geography Lead

“This fieldwork is an essential part of our geography curriculum. It gives children the chance to apply what they’ve learned in class to the real world, developing observation, data collection, and analytical skills.”

We can’t wait to see the fantastic reports the children produce from their investigations!

Our Year 3 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable day at Butser Ancient Farm, stepping into the fascinating world of the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. This immersive experience brought history to life and gave the children a hands-on understanding of how early humans lived, worked, and thrived.

Guided by a member of Butser’s award-winning education team, the children explored reconstructed ancient buildings and took part in a range of practical activities that deepened their historical knowledge.

Highlights of the Day

Archaeological Excavation
Pupils became archaeologists for the morning, learning excavation techniques and uncovering hidden artefacts. Working together, they interpreted their finds and placed them in historical context.

Ancient Rock Art
Using flint tools and natural resources, the children carved and coloured designs into chalk, discovering how early humans expressed beliefs and creativity through art.

Fire-Making
One of the most memorable experiences was learning how to safely create fire – a skill essential for cooking, warmth, and metalworking in the ancient world. Working in teams, pupils successfully produced flames and gained a real appreciation for this vital achievement.

The winter sunshine made the day even more special, and the children returned full of enthusiasm, eager to share what they had learned about life thousands of years ago.

What the Children Said

“I loved making fire! It was hard at first, but when we saw the smoke, everyone cheered!”
“Digging for artefacts was amazing. We found bones and pottery – it felt like real archaeology!”
“The rock art was my favourite because we got to use chalk and flint like people did thousands of years ago.”

A Word from Mrs Roach, Year 3 Lead

“This trip was a fantastic way to bring our history topic to life. The children were completely engaged and learned so much through hands-on experiences. It’s days like this that make learning memorable and meaningful.”

It was a truly inspiring experience that connected classroom learning with real-world history.

The performance brought Charles Dickens’ classic tale to life, following Ebenezer Scrooge—a cold-hearted miser who despises Christmas—on his journey of transformation. By the end, Scrooge becomes generous, kind and compassionate, spreading joy and helping the Cratchit family.

Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the show, deepening their understanding of this timeless story and its powerful themes of kindness and redemption. They’re now even more excited for all the festive activities coming up at school this December! ✨

“I liked when the ghosts came – it was spooky but fun!” – Year 6 pupil

The day was packed with hands-on activities designed to bring the past to life. Pupils took part in three main workshops, each exploring a different aspect of Roman life:

Military Manoeuvres – How do we fight? Children trained like Roman soldiers, learning discipline, teamwork and the skills needed to serve in the empire’s army.

Crime and Punishment – Was Roman justice fair? Pupils discovered the fascinating—and often brutal—legal system of ancient Rome, exploring how wealth and status influenced justice.

Daily Life Skills – What key skills are needed to support our life here? From spinning wool to building fires, children experienced the practical skills essential for survival in Roman Britain.

“I liked being a Roman soldier – the shields were heavy!” – Year 4 pupil
“We learned how Romans cooked and made clothes – it was fun!” – Year 4 pupil

Mr Ashby, Year 4 Lead, said:

“Roman Day is always a highlight. It’s incredible to see pupils so engaged and excited about history. These hands-on experiences make learning meaningful and unforgettable.”

This real-world experience gave pupils the chance to see the practical applications of their classroom learning, sparking curiosity and deepening their understanding of the properties and uses of rocks.

The children were fascinated to discover how materials like granite, limestone and slate are chosen for strength, durability and appearance. They asked thoughtful questions about why certain rocks are used for foundations, walls and decorative features.

“I didn’t know rocks could make houses – that’s amazing!” – Year 3 pupil

Armed with clipboards, maps, and plenty of enthusiasm, pupils conducted surveys to assess the terrain, facilities, and overall suitability of the area for a case study. It was a brilliant opportunity to apply classroom learning to the real world—and have fun doing it!

Back in the classroom, pupils will now analyse their findings and reflect on what makes a location appropriate for different purposes. This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of geographical concepts but also encouraged critical thinking and teamwork.

Miss Franks, who accompanied the trip, shared her thoughts:
“It was wonderful to see the children so engaged. They asked thoughtful questions, worked collaboratively, and really embraced the challenge. It’s experiences like this that make learning memorable.”

We’re proud of how Year 6 represented the school and look forward to seeing the insights they bring to their upcoming case study work.

This week, our school community came together to celebrate Black History Week under the theme: Standing Firm in Power and Pride. Through assemblies, drama workshops and classroom learning, children explored the lives and legacies of inspirational Black British figures, reflecting on themes of identity, resilience, achievement and pride.

Assemblies took place across the school to launch the week, encouraging pupils to think deeply about the theme and the importance of Black history in shaping our society. Each year group then focused on a significant individual whose story connects with the theme in a meaningful way:

EYFS – Trish Cooke Pride in our family, identity and celebrating our stories

Year 1 – Lenny Henry Pride through voice and laughter

Year 2 – Sam Watson Standing up and taking pride in what is fair

Year 3 – Floella Benjamin Pride in heritage and the power of sharing your story

Year 4 – Sam King Being resilient and having pride in your community

Year 6 – Paul Stephenson Power and pride in peaceful protest

In addition to classroom learning, pupils took part in drama workshops that brought history to life in engaging and imaginative ways:

Years 1, 2 and 5 enjoyed a storytelling workshop that celebrated diversity and identity. Through a creative narrative, children were introduced to inspirational figures such as Andrew Watson, the first Black British footballer, and Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a pioneering space scientist.

Years 3 and 4 explored the achievements of Sam King MBE, a key figure in the celebration of the Windrush generation. Known as “Mr. Windrush”, Sam King arrived in Britain on the Empire Windrush after serving in the RAF. He went on to become the first Black mayor of Southwark, co-founded the Windrush Foundation, and helped establish the first Windrush Day in 1988. His legacy continues to inspire pride and community spirit.

We are incredibly proud of the thoughtful discussions and creative work produced by our pupils throughout the week. A BIG thank you to Miss Barnes for organising this enriching programme and ensuring that our celebration of Black History was both meaningful and memorable.

At Aragon, we are always looking for meaningful ways to prepare our pupils for life beyond primary school. This September, we launched our very first Democracy Week – and what a success it was!

The purpose of the week was to introduce children to the idea of democracy and give them the chance to experience what it feels like to be part of an election. Pupils who wished to stand for one of our leadership roles prepared speeches or videos to share their ideas, while during OPAL playtimes they designed eye-catching posters and banners to support their campaigns.

On Friday afternoon, the whole school came together to vote. To make the process as authentic as possible, we even set up a ballot booth, just like the ones used in general elections.

The roles on offer this year included:

School Council

Eco Warriors

Reading Champs

PE Leaders

Digital Leaders

Wellbeing Champs

House and Vice Captains

The atmosphere around school was fantastic all week, with campaign posters brightening our corridors and children passionately discussing their ideas. We were incredibly proud of every pupil who put themselves forward for a role – it takes real courage and confidence to stand up in front of your peers, and each candidate showed great ambition and enthusiasm.

The results of the elections will be announced in Monday’s assembly, and we look forward to seeing our new pupil leaders take on their roles and make a real difference across the school this year.

Democracy Week has been an inspiring way to celebrate pupil voice, responsibility and leadership. It is certainly something we will look to continue in future years.

This week, our Year 6 pupils took part in a powerful and engaging workshop delivered by Voicebox CIC, an organisation that works with schools across the UK to support pupils’ personal development, emotional wellbeing and respectful relationships.

The workshop, titled Healthy Masculinity, was designed to help pupils reflect on identity, challenge stereotypes and explore how we can all show strength through kindness, empathy and self-awareness. While the session focused on some of the pressures boys may face, it was inclusive and relevant to all pupils, encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection.

Pupils explored questions such as:

What does it mean to be strong?

How can we be good friends and role models?

Why is it important to talk about our feelings?

The session was interactive and age-appropriate, using real-life scenarios and group activities to help pupils think critically and compassionately. It supported our wider PSHE curriculum and our commitment to nurturing respectful, emotionally literate young people.

Here’s what some of our pupils had to say:

“I liked how we talked about feelings and how it’s okay to show them. It made me think about how I treat my friends.” – Year 6 Pupil
“It was good to hear that being strong doesn’t mean you have to be tough all the time. You can be strong by being kind.” – Year 6 Pupil
“I didn’t realise how many stereotypes there are. It made me want to be more myself and not worry about what people expect.” – Year 6 Pupil

We were incredibly proud of how maturely and thoughtfully our pupils engaged with the session. It was a valuable opportunity to reinforce the importance of respect, inclusion and emotional wellbeing in a safe and supportive environment.

As we bring another fantastic school year to a close, we took time this week to celebrate some of the incredible achievements of our pupils during the summer term.

One of the highlights was the presentation of our Governor Awards, a special recognition given to pupils who have consistently demonstrated our school values. These awards celebrate not only academic effort but also kindness, resilience, creativity and responsibility. We were delighted to welcome Isabelle Paget (Chair of Governors), along with Gemma Fromage-Crawford and Dominique Delhalle, who presented the awards to our very deserving recipients in a special assembly. Congratulations to all those recognised – we are so proud of you!

Another end-of-year favourite returned this week – Aragon’s Got Talent! Organised by our fantastic School Council, the show gave pupils across the school the chance to perform and shine. From singers to dancers, comedians to magicians, every act showed amazing confidence and enthusiasm.

This year’s winners were The Black Roots, a brilliant Year 6 band who wowed the crowd with a powerful performance of Seven Nation Army. Their energy and teamwork had everyone cheering and headbanging along – a well-earned victory to end their primary school journey on a high.

A huge well done to all involved. It has been a joy to end the term celebrating the talent, hard work and character that makes Aragon so special.

Today saw the return of Aragon’s Got Talent, a fantastic celebration of creativity, confidence and flair, brilliantly organised by our School Council. Pupils from across the school took to the stage to share their talents, with the show expertly compered by our two brilliant hosts, Jasmine and Mihael.

The acts were as impressive as they were varied. Year 6 band The Black Roots (Jayden, Jack, Vinnie and Ben) got the crowd going with a rousing rendition of Seven Nation Army. Brooklyn in Year 2 had everyone in stitches with a series of hilarious cow jokes, while Annabelle and Leonie in Year 1 captivated the audience with their storytelling skills.

Year 3’s Osmaan, Danny, Logan, Sebastian and Axel showed off their football flair with flips, tricks and fancy footwork. Pearli in Year 5 wowed with a beautiful classical piano performance, and Niamh, Mila and Margo in Year 2 impressed with their gymnastic routine full of flips, cartwheels and round-offs.

Year 5’s Harrison and Leonard brought the laughs with their comedy act, while Jacob in Year 3 shared an original song he had written himself. Year 6’s Eugenia, Hailey and Naimal delivered a high-energy K-pop performance, complete with singing and dancing.

In Year 1, Atarah and Orla performed a song they had written themselves, with fantastic harmonies, and Maya in Year 4 rounded off the show with a powerful dance routine to Gabriella by Katseye.

To round off an exciting and productive year, Year 3 took part in a local Geography field trip as part of their learning about land use in the community. The trip provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to apply their knowledge in a real-world context and practise key geographical and data-handling skills.

As part of the visit, the children explored the area surrounding school and observed how different spaces are used. A particular focus of the trip was a visit to King George’s Playing Field, where the children investigated how the park is used by members of the public.

Working in small groups, the pupils created tally charts to record information such as how many people were walking, playing, exercising, or relaxing in different parts of the park. Back in the classroom, they used this data to create graphs showing patterns in how the space is used. This helped to consolidate their understanding of both land use and data representation, making clear links between Geography and Maths.

The fieldwork also encouraged pupils to think critically about public spaces and their role in the community. They discussed why green spaces are important and how they might be improved or better maintained in future.

Well done to all of Year 3 for your enthusiasm, focus, and teamwork throughout the trip — a great way to finish the year and celebrate your learning in Geography!

Year 3 recently enjoyed a fantastic cultural experience with a visit to the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon to watch The Boy with Wings, an exciting stage adaptation of the book by Sir Lenny Henry. The production was full of energy, imagination, and heartfelt moments — and it captured the children’s attention from the moment the curtain rose.

The story follows Tunde, an ordinary schoolboy who discovers he has an extraordinary gift. As he learns to embrace his superpowers, he also learns important lessons about friendship, courage, and celebrating what makes us different. These powerful themes resonated with the children and sparked rich discussions on the journey home.

Attending a live theatre performance was a valuable learning experience, particularly in supporting the Year 3 English curriculum. Seeing a story brought to life on stage helped the children to deepen their understanding of narrative structure, character development, and dramatic techniques. The expressive language, movement, and stagecraft provided a wonderful model for their own speaking and writing.

Many children were inspired not only by the story, but also by the performance itself. Watching professional actors interpret the characters and convey emotion through voice and movement gave pupils a real appreciation for the craft of storytelling.

A huge thank you to the Polka Theatre for such a captivating performance and to all the staff and volunteers who supported the trip. It was a truly memorable day that enriched the children’s learning and sparked plenty of creativity back in the classroom.

The visit perfectly complemented their current learning in English, offering a rich and immersive opportunity to experience storytelling in an entirely new way. From the moment they stepped inside the studio, the children were captivated by the wizarding world that has inspired millions of readers and writers alike.

During the day, the pupils explored legendary sets including the majestic Great Hall, the cobbled lanes of Diagon Alley, and the mysterious Forbidden Forest. They were thrilled to see original props and costumes up close, gaining a deeper appreciation of how the magic of the books is brought to life on screen.

There were plenty of hands-on experiences to spark creativity and imagination. Pupils had the chance to practise wand choreography, learning the movements behind some of the film’s most famous spells. A particular highlight was the green screen broomstick experience — laughter filled the room as the children soared over London like true witches and wizards.

Beyond the excitement and wonder, the trip also provided valuable educational insights. Children learned about the film production process, the use of special effects, and the intricate detail behind set and costume design.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Hugo from the Magic Lantern Art History Company. Hugo, an experienced art historian and archaeologist who works with London museums, brought history to life through powerful storytelling and fascinating images.

Year 3: Exploring Ancient Egypt

Year 3 began the day with a journey into ancient Egypt. Hugo used striking visuals and engaging commentary to immerse pupils in the world of pyramids, scrolls, and hieroglyphics. The children were thrilled to share that they had already made their own papyrus, which Hugo praised enthusiastically. One highlight was a virtual exploration of an Egyptian tomb, where pupils were surprised to discover its bright colours and intricate artwork.

Alex and David (3G) said,

“We learnt about myths in paintings and the mystery of hieroglyphics. Hugo told us the story of a magical book that could make someone as powerful as the gods!”

Year 6: Art as Propaganda

Later, Year 6 examined how artists used images to influence public opinion during the First and Second World Wars. Drawing on their history learning, pupils explored wartime propaganda posters and discussed how art can shape emotions and perceptions. They considered the symbolism in the images and reflected on how artists convey meaning beyond the surface.

Mihaela and Mishaal (6MB) commented,

“Some posters showed peaceful countryside scenes to remind people of what they were fighting for. Artists used pictures to speak louder than words.”

A Memorable Day of Learning

Hugo’s visit was an inspiring experience that encouraged pupils to think critically, ask questions, and view art as a powerful form of communication. It was a day full of discovery, creativity, and connection across history and art.

Last week, our school came alive with energy, enthusiasm and team spirit as we celebrated our annual Healthy Me Week. The week was filled with exciting activities designed to promote physical health, emotional wellbeing and collaboration, giving children opportunities to try new challenges, strengthen friendships and build confidence.

A huge thank you goes to Miss Ballantine, Mr Hicks and Miss Smith for their exceptional organisation of the week. Every aspect of the timetable was thoughtfully planned, and their commitment to enriching the pupil experience was clear to see. Reflecting on the week, Miss Ballantine shared, "Healthy Me Week is always, without a doubt, my favourite week in the school calendar! There's nothing better than seeing the children thrive taking part in sports and activities whilst they become even more aware of the importance of healthy, active lifestyles. Throughout the week, the ability of the children able to work collaboratively with their class and house team peers improved drastically as the week went on- even in the stifling heat!"

Each day at lunchtime, our Year 5 Sports Leaders stepped up to run fun and engaging activities for younger pupils, helping to keep them active and involved. In between the various scheduled events, children took part in team-building activities, including a hugely popular den-building challenge. Each year group had their turn to head out to the field and, working in their house teams, they constructed dens using tyres, logs, tarpaulin and rope. The activity encouraged excellent communication and problem- solving skills, and house points were awarded for teamwork, effort and creativity.

On Monday, the week began with a series of whole-school team challenges. Key Stage 1 and Reception joined Miss Smith for an interactive assembly, which began with a hoola hoop teamwork task. Afterwards, pupils headed to the field for the “Longest Line” challenge, where they worked in house teams to create the longest possible line using anything they could find. Meanwhile, Key Stage 2 gathered on the field for a “Save the Water” challenge, using bins to transport water with minimal spillage, before heading into their own assembly with Miss Ballantine, where the winning team (Unicorn) was revealed. These activities highlighted the importance of communication, resilience and creativity in solving problems together.

On Tuesday afternoon, the team from Olive Kitchen visited to speak to pupils about healthy eating, running sessions for both EYFS and KS2.

Throughout the week, each year group enjoyed their own Sports Day event. Year 5 and 6 kicked things off with their sports morning on Tuesday, with Unicorns taking the early lead. Wednesday saw Year 3 and 4 taking part in their events, with Reception rounding off the week with their Sports Day on Friday morning. Year 1 and 2's Sports day was unfortunately postponed due to the soaring temperatures but we look forward to Wednesday 16th July to cheer on our KS1 pupils! These events gave every child the opportunity to challenge themselves physically, cheer on their teammates and contribute to their house team’s overall score. On Thursday, our Nursery children took part in a joyful Rainbow Run, which was a colourful, high-energy celebration that left everyone smiling.

We'd like to thank the wonderful pupils of RPHS who came to help on both mornings - running events, tallying scores, helping the teachers and encouraging the children. Thank you so much and particular thank you to Mr John Oldridge for organising the pupils and volunteering his time.

Two highlights of the week were the much-anticipated staff v student matches. Monday saw the netball match take place on the top playground, with pupils and staff alike showing determination and good sportsmanship. On Friday afternoon, the staff and student football teams met on the field for an exciting finale to the week. Both events drew enthusiastic crowds and lots of laughter.

Netball match score: 22-1 (to the staff)

Football match score: [score TBC]

Throughout Healthy Me Week, pupils earned house points for their efforts in all activities, with every event contributing to the final total.

Healthy Me Week is always a highlight of our school year, and this year was no exception. It was a celebration of everything we value at Aragon: kindness, respect, teamwork, resilience and ambition. Thank you once again to all the staff who supported the week and to all the pupils who took part with such positivity and enthusiasm. We are already looking forward to next year!

Pupils in both Year 4 and Year 5 recently had the privilege of taking part in two fantastic Sports Day events, generously hosted by King’s College School. These events brought together local schools for a day of friendly competition, team spirit and fun-filled physical activity.

Year 5 were invited back to King's once more for a full day of athletics, competing in six different events: standing long jump, chest push, target throw, speed bounce, a 100-metre sprint and a long-distance run. The children demonstrated great resilience and sportsmanship throughout the day, with their excellent behaviour noted and praised by King’s College staff. The winners of each event were awarded certificates in recognition of their efforts and achievements.

To round off the day, Year 5 took part in a mixed relay against other participating schools. They won the first race convincingly and secured a very close second-place finish in the remaining two — the final race being a particular highlight, as the team powered through from fourth place to a nail-biting second.

Mr Lillie reflected on the day: “The children were a real credit to the school. They showed such enthusiasm and respect throughout the day, and it was a joy to see them supporting one another and taking part with such energy and pride.”

Year 4 also had an amazing day at King’s, joining in a range of energetic and exciting activities. From start to finish, the children gave it their all, showing enthusiasm, teamwork and perseverance. The standout moment was undoubtedly the 10-person relay, where Aragon’s determination and speed led to two brilliant victories!

Mr Hicks said, “It was a fantastic day from start to finish. Our pupils were brilliant ambassadors for Aragon and made the most of every opportunity — we are incredibly proud of them all.”

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to King’s College School for their warm hospitality and for organising two inspiring, well-run events that gave our pupils the chance to shine. We look forward to continuing this valued partnership in future years

The sun was shining and spirits were high as children settled into their seats to enjoy the action on the pitch. But the day offered much more than just spectating — pupils were also invited to take part in a variety of engaging games and activities that brought the sport to life in fun and interactive ways.

One of the highlights of the day came when children had the chance to meet some of the professional players and collect their autographs — a truly memorable experience for any young cricket fan.

Last week, our Year 4 pupils ventured out on an exciting geography fieldwork trip as part of their learning around the enquiry question: What are the similarities and differences between the Amazon and the River Wandle?

The children began their investigation by measuring the velocity of the River Wandle. To do this, they first measured the length of a section of the river, then dropped a stick into the water and timed how long it took to travel a set distance. This hands-on approach allowed them to calculate the river's speed and begin drawing comparisons with the mighty Amazon.

Following this, Year 4 explored the nearby Wetlands area, observing and identifying plants and animals in the river habitat. They noted some interesting similarities, such as the presence of frogs in both environments, while also recognising key differences — particularly in the length and scale of the two rivers.

It was a fantastic day of outdoor learning and enquiry-led exploration. The children thoroughly enjoyed applying their geographical skills in a real-world setting and came away with a deeper understanding of river systems and the diversity of global environments.

Well done, Year 4 — you were true geographers in action!

On Tuesday 23rd June, our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a truly memorable experience at Raynes Park High School, where they took part in a vibrant and inspiring performing arts workshop.

From the moment they arrived, the children were immersed in the world of drama, music and dance. The workshop focused on the much-loved musical High School Musical, and our pupils relished the chance to learn one of its iconic songs. They impressed us all with their energy as they picked up choreography to one of the film’s biggest hits, and demonstrated real flair and enthusiasm as they performed a dramatic scene from the show.

This exciting opportunity gave our children the chance to express themselves creatively, work as a team, and build their confidence in a fun and supportive environment. A particular highlight was meeting and working alongside the talented cast members from Raynes Park High School’s end-of-year production. Their passion and skill were truly inspiring, and our pupils left buzzing with excitement and admiration.

A huge thank you to the staff and students at Raynes Park High School for hosting such a brilliant session. Year 5 returned to school full of energy, with memories they will treasure and a renewed love for the performing arts.

The week began with an assembly led by Miss Blake, who introduced the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling in order to help protect our planet.

Each year group took part in a recycling-themed lesson, exploring a key environmental question and presenting their findings creatively through posters, speeches, songs and more. The children also enjoyed a story about oceans and plastic pollution, helping them to understand the real-world impact of waste on marine life.

Following this, pupils used recycled materials to create their own ocean animals, which were proudly displayed in the school hall. The display was a great success, and classes thoroughly enjoyed viewing each other’s thoughtful and imaginative creations.

Miss Blake would like to say a big well done to all the children for showing such enthusiasm throughout the week

Year 6 kicked off their final half term in style with an unforgettable day at Chessington World of Adventures – and what a day it was! As an end-of-year treat, the children enjoyed a well-earned break from the classroom and threw themselves into the fun with boundless energy and excitement.

From the high-speed thrills of Vampire and Mandrill Mayhem, to the soaking fun of Tiger Rock and the wild twists and turns of Rattlesnake, there were squeals of joy, endless laughter and plenty of brave faces. They also had time to explore the zoo and sea life centre, enjoying close-up encounters with a wide range of animals.

As always, the children were an absolute credit to the school. Miss Ballantine said, “It was such a joy to spend the day with them. Their behaviour was exemplary, and it was wonderful to see them all so happy and relaxed after such a busy year.”

Later in the week, Year 6 continued the adventure with their PGL residential — but more on that elsewhere!

This was a week full of celebration, laughter and lasting memories. Well done, Year 6 — you truly deserved it!

From the moment they arrived, the children threw themselves into every challenge with determination, courage and enthusiasm. Whether they were scaling the heights of Jacob’s Ladder, taking a leap of faith (literally!), flying down the zip wire, or abseiling with nerves of steel, their resilience and team spirit were truly inspiring.

Throughout the week, they also took part in survival skills sessions, developed their accuracy in rifle shooting, and tested their communication and cooperation in a range of team-building activities. These moments not only built confidence and independence but also created memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

The staff at PGL commented on how polite, engaged and supportive our pupils were – a real credit to our school. We could not be prouder of how each and every child embraced the experience.

We would also like to take a moment to thank our wonderful Year 6 staff team, who supported, encouraged and cheered the children on every step of the way. We think they’ve just about recovered…!

A huge well done to all of Year 6 – you were absolutely amazing. We cannot wait to see the confidence and teamwork you’ve developed shine through in your final few weeks at primary school.

The interactive concert introduced the children to a range of jazz styles and instruments in a lively and engaging way. The children learnt a number of different singing techniques and it was incredibly uplifting to hear the primary school pupils perform songs with the professional musicians, filling the hall with music together. The performers did a wonderful job of involving the audience, and our pupils responded with great enthusiasm.

This event provided a valuable opportunity to extend the children’s musical learning beyond the classroom and helped to deepen their understanding of rhythm, improvisation, and performance. The children represented the school brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

We are very grateful to King’s College for hosting us and for generously providing transport. Thank you also to the parents who volunteered their time to help supervise on the day.

Vyshyvanka Day is marked by the wearing of traditional embroidered shirts known as vyshyvanka, each one beautifully crafted and rich in meaning. These garments are a symbol of national pride and a celebration of Ukrainian history, artistry and resilience.

Some of our wonderful Ukrainian pupils came to school dressed in their vyshyvanka, proudly sharing a piece of their culture with our school community. It was a joy to see the vibrant colours and intricate embroidery, and a meaningful reminder of the beauty and strength found in cultural traditions.

We thank our Ukrainian families for helping us to learn more about this important day and for giving us the opportunity to celebrate with them.

Our school hall was transformed into a window to the cosmos as the WonderDome mobile planetarium came to visit. Both Reception and Year 5 children were treated to a truly awe-inspiring experience. For Year 5, the visit was a powerful way to enhance their learning in science, linking directly to their curriculum focus on space.

The immersive dome created a captivating environment where pupils could explore complex scientific concepts in an engaging and memorable way. For Year 5, this was a golden opportunity to deepen their understanding of key topics such as the phases of the Moon, the relative movements of the Earth, Moon and Sun, and the vast scale of our solar system and beyond. These abstract ideas, often difficult to grasp through lessons alone, were brought vividly to life through stunning visuals and expert explanations from the WonderDome team.

Pupils were fascinated to learn about our place in the Universe and how our planet fits into the larger cosmic picture. They were especially engaged during discussions about the Moon’s phases, a concept they had previously explored in class. The planetarium allowed them to see these changes from a new perspective, consolidating their knowledge and igniting further curiosity.

The session was highly interactive, with time for pupils to pose their own thoughtful questions to the presenter. Their eagerness to learn and the depth of their questions demonstrated not only their growing scientific understanding, but also the power of immersive experiences to inspire and excite.

This visit has given our Year 5 pupils a renewed sense of wonder about the Universe and a stronger grasp of key scientific ideas. It was a fantastic way to enrich their learning and will undoubtedly be a highlight of their science journey this year.

Our School Council were lucky enough to visit the iconic Houses of Parliament. This fantastic trip has now been running for three years at Aragon Primary, and it never disappoints.

It was an amazing day during which the children learnt so much about our country's traditions and pageantry. For example, did you know that a bell sounds when a new law needs to be voted on, and MPs have only eight minutes to cast their vote? This tradition dates back to when it took the Prime Minister eight minutes to travel from Downing Street to the Houses of Parliament—though we’re not sure if that’s still the case today!

Siobhain McDonagh, the Labour MP for Merton and Morden, gave us a tour which took the School Council behind the scenes of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. We learnt how votes—also known as divisions, as we now know—are made when new laws are passed. We even had the chance to cast a 'no' vote on our very own proposed law: The Law of Homework!

After our tour, we had lunch in one of the committee rooms and held our own School Council meeting there, with our MP present.

It was such an incredible experience, and our School Council did themselves proud. Their behaviour was impeccable, and they even received compliments from members of the public during our train journey.

As School Council Lead, I want them to know how proud they made me—I thoroughly enjoyed accompanying them on this memorable trip.

This week, our school was delighted to take part in the borough-wide ‘Make Merton Merry’ project, an exciting year-long initiative funded by Merton Council. This fantastic project is designed to connect local artists with schools and businesses, working together to create stunning artistic displays that will be exhibited throughout the borough.

Thanks to the dedication of Mrs Curl, we had the privilege of welcoming artist Nadia Thompson to our school. Thirty pupils, representing all year groups, had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Nadia on a truly inspiring piece of artwork titled The Tree of Hopes & Dreams. This wonderful creation merges poetry and visual art, with each leaf of the tree carrying words of hope and aspiration written by our pupils.

The experience was both engaging and thought-provoking, allowing our children to express their creativity while reflecting on their dreams for the future. Under Nadia’s guidance, they explored the power of words and artistic expression, culminating in a piece that beautifully represents their collective imagination and positivity.

Once we receive confirmation of where The Tree of Hopes & Dreams will be displayed, we will share the details so you can see this remarkable piece for yourself. We are incredibly proud of our pupils for their enthusiasm and creativity, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this inspiring community project.

Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s continue to celebrate the power of art and poetry in bringing our community together!

The visit brought their studies to life as they explored the World War One and World War Two galleries, deepening their understanding of these significant historical events.

One of the most powerful aspects of the trip was the opportunity to engage with primary sources—many of which the students had previously examined in class. Seeing these artefacts firsthand helped to bridge the gap between the past and the present, making history feel even more real and relevant.

The visit sparked meaningful discussions about the impact of war, the experiences of those who lived through it, and the importance of remembrance. It was a truly memorable experience, reinforcing the value of learning from history and reflecting on the lessons it teaches us today.

Well done, Year 6, for your enthusiasm and thoughtful engagement throughout the trip!

We kicked things off with a fantastic costume parade, where every child looked amazing in their book-inspired outfits. From Elphaba and Glinda to Harry Potter characters, dragons, Dork Diaries kids, Poirot, Willy Wonka and his Oompa Loompas, Cruella DeVille, Seussical characters, and so many more – the effort was truly outstanding! A huge WELL DONE to everyone who dressed up. Special congratulations to Dobby (Elliot – Y5) and Oompa Loompa (Zachary – Y2), who were chosen as our KS2 and KS1 costume winners by Mr. Hicks, Mr. Lillie, and Mr. Kennedy.

We were also lucky to welcome David Vaughan, author of Harry Heal – The Friendly Footballer, who delivered an inspiring assembly to all the children. He then led a special writing workshop for our talented Page Boyz – a huge thank you to him for encouraging our young writers!

A real highlight of the day was inviting our families into school to share a story with their children. It’s always so special to see parents, grandparents, and carers enjoying books together, creating magical reading moments that we know the children will cherish. Thank you to everyone who joined us – your enthusiasm and support mean so much!

In the spirit of celebrating books, every child applied for a Blue Peter Reading Badge, which has now been sent home – fingers crossed that many of them will receive this fantastic reward!

One of the other highlights of the day was our Teacher Swap, where teachers visited different classes to share a story. Throughout the day, we took part in lots of book-themed activities and spent time reading and sharing some truly amazing stories.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who purchased a book from our Amazon Wishlist. We are thrilled to have received 67 new books, which will enrich our bookshelves and inspire children for years to come – we are so grateful for your generosity!

Finally, a big thank you to Miss Brown for organising such a magical and memorable World Book Day.

Here's to another year of reading, storytelling, and book-loving adventures! 📚✨

His visit was nothing short of inspiring, as he captivated our students with his incredible journey of resilience, determination, and success as a blind footballer.

During the assembly, Darren shared his experiences of overcoming challenges, proving that a positive mindset and perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements. His powerful message resonated with everyone in the room, reminding us that obstacles can be overcome with hard work and self-belief.

Following the assembly, some of our students had the unique opportunity to participate in a blind football workshop. This hands-on experience challenged them to play football without sight, offering a glimpse into the skills and determination required to compete at Darren’s level. It was an eye-opening activity that deepened our appreciation for his incredible accomplishments.

A huge thank you to Darren for his time, motivation, and encouragement! His visit left a lasting impression on our students and reinforced the important lesson that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.
