Year Five

Year 5 Information

Welcome to Year 5

This is Year 5's information page where you can find all relevant information regarding your child's class and daily routines.

Support Staff: Mrs Blackburn, Mrs Stonell

PE: As you may be aware this year, we will be having two PE sessions each week. One session will be delivered by a sports coach and the other by your child's class teacher. On the day that your child is having the PE lesson delivered by the sports coach they may come to school in their PE kits. However, on the day in which your child's PE lesson is being delivered by their class teacher they must come into school in their school uniform (as they did prior to lockdown), they will then need to bring their PE kit to get changed into for their PE session. Boys and girls will get changed separately and will remain in their PE kit till home time.

Please can your child come to school wearing their full P.E. kit on their coach P.E. day. This should be their house-coloured t-shirt, school jumper and unbranded black or navy bottom. All jewellery must be removed prior to the lesson. Please make sure clothing is appropriate to match the weather as often our PE lessons will be outdoors. On the other PE lesson day your child will need to bring this full kit in with them to school, please try to make sure this is labelled as we don’t want the children to loose any belongings.

Please see below a timetable of your child's PE sessions

In Year 5, as part of the PE curriculum, children attend swimming lessons at Morden Leisure centre. Your child’s class teacher will inform you of when these will take place.

Snacks:  We warmly encourage your child to bring a healthy snack to enjoy during their breaktime (11-11:15am). All children are strongly advised to come to school with a water bottle (containing water only) which can be refilled throughout the school day.

Equipment: We provide your child with all the equipment they will need for the school day. However, in an effort to aid transition to Year 6, we welcome your child to bring in a pencil case from home with their own equipment. Please note if these become a distraction to your child, they may be removed by your child’s class teacher.

Reading: The children should be reading at home daily. For children who do read every day or put extra effort into their reading comments, their name will be entered into the weekly Reading Raffle where they might win a book of their choice!

In the front cover of your child’s reading diary there is a document with ideas and prompts that the children can use to base their reading responses on. Children should be encouraged to read a range of genres, texts, and authors. We have a wide range of books in our classrooms, which the children are more than welcome to borrow. It really benefits the children to continue to read to an adult at least once a week, so that you can support them and discuss the book together.

Homework: On a Friday homework is set on Seesaw, which we use across the school, however if your child struggles to access this online they can request a paper copy from their child’s class teacher. We also use Seesaw as the main means for you to stay connected with your child’s class teacher.

On Tuesdays, all children will be sent home with a paper copy of the arithmetic homework.

Homework is expected to be completed at home and on time. If your child struggles to complete their homework at home, we do offer a homework club (free of charge) on a Tuesday and Thursday after school. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if this is something you feel would benefit your child.

The children will have a weekly spelling test. The spellings will be uploaded to Seesaw and Spelling Shed each Monday for the children to start learning. These spellings will be tested every Friday. Your child should regularly be practising on Spelling Shed in preparation for this test. On a Friday, your child will also have a times table test, so we want the children to continue to practise these regularly using Times Table Rockstars. If your child needs a copy of any of their login details, please ask your child’s class teacher.

Other information: In Year 5, children have an exciting opportunity to nominate themselves to become a vice captain for their house team. This role will allow them to help with school events, including our house afternoons.

We study an array of exciting topics across Year 5 including Harry Potter in which we visit Warner Brother Studios, where the films were filmed. This is always a firm favourite trip amongst the children!

As one of our units in PE, our children are trained as sports leaders to lead group activities with younger children. The children will then have opportunities later in the year to utilise these skills with younger children during their breaktimes, as well as supporting during sports days.
