Intent
At Aragon Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Design Technology Curriculum which engages, inspires and challenges our pupils. Our Design Technology curriculum equips our pupils with the knowledge and skills to design, create and evaluate a range of products. As pupils progress through the curriculum, they develop the necessary skills enabling them to think, reflect and work creatively to solve problems individually and as part of a team. Design Technology allows pupils to apply their knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, giving children motivation and meaning for their learning. Our children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable people. From our curriculum, they are able to develop an understanding of the impact of Design Technology on daily life and the wider world.
The National Curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
- “develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.”
Implementation
At Aragon Primary, we ensure that Design Technology lessons are purposeful, and the activities are linked to current topics. As children progress through the curriculum, we ensure that the skills that have been previously taught, are built upon making our lessons challenging. We ensure that projects and activities are relevant and enjoyable but also motivate and challenge pupils. Our school provides a wide range of materials and resources to support the teaching and learning of Design Technology across the school which enables our pupils to immerse themselves in DT lessons. Children throughout the school cover a range of topics allowing them to explore and discover the different aspects of the wonderful world of Design Technology and ensures that pupils receive a varied and balanced exposure to Design Technology.
Impact
The Design Technology curriculum develops children’s confidence in their work as they are encouraged to be creative whilst also being logical and practical. Children are aware of how to carry out activities and work safely. Children can discuss, reflect, evaluate and improve their work and are confident in the planning, designing and making of their products.
